The bacteriocin production of the test strains was examined by the double-layer method [38, 39]. Numbered strains: 1, Escherichia coli pJB4JI (containing Tn5)/1830; 2, H-rif-8-6 (wild type, parent); 3, TH22–6 (the transposon Tn5 insertional mutant); 4, TH22–10 (the transposon Tn5 insertional mutant for carocin S1) [20]. The indicator organism used in the agar overlay was Pcc strain Ea1068. The red colony, Serratia marcescens, was used as a marker, to indicate the direction and location of numbered colonies.
