Correlations between biofilm formation and the adhesion, invasion, and intra-macrophage replication abilities of both AIEC and non-AIEC strains. Adhesion and invasion indices correlated positively with biofilm formation capacity, whereas intra-macrophage survival and replication did not. Adhesion index was calculated as: I_ADH = attached bacterial cells/intestinal cell; invasion index as: I_INV(%) = (intracellular bacteria/4×106 bacteria inoculated) × 100; and replication index as: I_REPL = (cfu ml-1 at 24 h/cfu ml-1 at 1 h)× 100.
