  1. M9 minimal media with glucose (0.4%), succinate (1%), fumarate (1%), or malate (1%) were prepared as described in Methods. Cells were grown in LB to an OD600 of 0.6, washed with 1× M9 salts at 4°C, and inoculated into fresh minimal media at a starting OD600 nm of 0.05. Cultures were incubated at 37°C and sampled every hour. This experiment was performed in triplicate.
