From: Impact of oral simvastatin therapy on acute lung injury in mice during pneumococcal pneumonia

Statins decrease leukocyte infiltration into the lungs. A) Total cell counts obtained by bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) 24 h after intratracheal infection with 1 X 105 cfu were determined by visual counting using a hemocytometer (n = 6/group). Differential cell counts of cytospins prepared from the same BAL demonstrating B) lower monocytes/macrophages in mice receiving the high statin diet and C) a dose-dependent reduction in neutrophil influx 24 h after infection. Data are presented as the mean ± SEM. Statistics were determined by a two-tailed student’s t-test. P < 0.05 was considered significant in comparison to Control fed mice.
