IFN-related genes are induced at the site of inoculation in response to a disseminating B. burgdorferi strain. Groups of C3H/HeJ mice were inoculated with 1x104 spirochetes of B. burgdorferi strains B515 (n = 9), B331 (n = 7) or B31-4 (n = 7), or with medium (control; n = 9). After 24 h skin biopsies were collected from the site of inoculation and processed for RNA. Transcript levels for nine IFN-responsive genes were assessed for individual animals by real-time RT-PCR. The mean fold change value for each experimental group was calculated relative to the mean value of the control group and is indicated by a horizontal line. *, P < 0.05; **, P < 0.01; ***, P < 0.001 relative to the mean of the control group
