Binding of GroEL to the host components. Protein adherence to collagen type I, collagen type IV, laminin, plasminogen, plasma fibronectin, fibrinogen, elastin (a), C4 and FH (b) was assessed by an ELISA-based assay. One micromolar of recombinant protein was added to wells previously coated with the target proteins. Lp25 and LigBC were used as negative and positive binding controls, respectively. The absorbance values obtained with BSA were subtracted from values obtained with binding of the recombinant proteins to host components. Data represent the mean of absorbance value at 492 nm ± standard error of three independent experiments. For statistical analyses, the binding of GroEL protein to host components was compared to the binding of the negative-control protein Lp25 by t-test. Values of p < 0.05 (*) were considered statistically significant
