β-galactosidase release assays confirm cell lysis in LB in the presence of 5% CO 2 and that zwf confers resistance. Release of β-galactosidase from the cytosol of the bacteria was used to test if the decrease in CFU observed in YS873, in LB in the presence of 5% CO2, resulted from cell lysis. The strains were grown under either ambient air or 5% CO2 conditions.
