In vitro growth of S. aureus in the presence of mersacidin. To assess suitable mersacidin concentrations for microarray experiments, the lantibiotic was added to an exponentially growing S. aureus culture at an OD600 of ~0.5 (time point "a"). In the microarray experiments, the cells were harvested at an OD600 of ~1 (time point "b") before the reduced growth rates of the cultures became visible. S. aureus SG511 (black diamonds, 1 μg/ml; white diamonds, control); S. aureus SA137/93A (black triangle, 16 μg/ml; white triangle, control); S. aureus SA137/93G (black square, 16 μg/ml; grey square, 4 μg/ml; white square, control).
