Effects of priA inactivation on survival/growth of meningococcal strains in HeLa cells. HeLa cells (105/well) were infected with B1940, B1940ΩpriA or B1940ΩpriA/priA+ at a MOI of 50, treated with gentamicin and re-incubated in DMEM for the indicated times. Bacteria were centrifuged onto cells to start infection. After saponin lysis, CFU from intracellular bacteria were scored. Values are relative to the number of intracellular B1940 at time 0 (104 bacteria per 2 × 105 cells per ml) and are means of at least ten independent experiments made in triplicate with standard errors.
