A typical Sephacryl S400 column elution profile of the three PSs isolated from E. faecium B210860. Elution profiles from the five E. faecalis strains are similar. Fractions positive in immunodot blotting with antiserum raised with E. faecium B210860 cells are indicated. The dextran fractions are contaminated with proteins as revealed by UV absorbance at 280 nm. The heteroglycan fractions are protein-free, positive in carbohydrate assay, and do not react with antisera induced by bacterial cells.
