Survival of W. dermatitidis yeast cells in the presence of lysing enzymes. Strain 8656, wdpks1 Δ-1, and wdpks1 Δ-1-501 yeast cells grown for 7 days in YPD medium at 37°C and incubated in different concentration of Sigma lysing enzymes. Survival was compared to fungal cells incubated in PBS. The melanin-deficient mutant was significantly more susceptible to killing by incubation in lysing enzymes. Values are of the standard errors of the means for three measurements. *, p < 0.001 and **, p < 0.01. The experiment was repeated with similar results.
