Figure 4

Antigenic properties and oligomerization of native and recombinant FimA. A) Whole cell agglutination by type-2 fimbriae specific antisera (derived from genospecies 1 ATCC 12104) of A. naeslundii genospecies 1 (strains 12104, Pn-22-E, P-5-N) but neither of genospecies 2 (strains LY7, P-1-N, P-1-K) nor of A. odontolyticus (strain PK984). Experiments were repeated three times with similar results. B) Western blots of whole cell proteins from strains of A. naeslundii genospecies 1 and 2 and A. odontolyticus PK984 with type-2 fimbriae specific antisera. FimA monomers (no. 1), oligomers (no. 2) and polymers (no. 3) are marked. C) Western blots of whole cell proteins from A. naeslundii strain 12104 and recombinant FimA from strain 12104, and Coomassie blue-stained gel electrophoresis pattern (to the right) of the mono- to oligomer region of recombinant FimA. Molecular mass markers are indicated.
