The scavenging of endogenously generated H 2 O 2 is not a prerequisite for aerobic growth of H. influenzae Rd in rich complex medium. (A) Aerobic growth of wild-type H. influenzae Rd (closed diamonds) and hktE- pgdx- H. influenzae Rd (open triangles) in rich sBHI broth. (B) Anaerobic-to-aerobic shift (indicated by the single arrow) of freshly diluted (1/50) wild-type H. influenzae Rd (closed diamonds) and hktE- pgdx- H. influenzae Rd (open triangles) cultures. Of these cultures, 1/50 subcultures in fresh sBHI broth were prepared at the time point indicated by the double arrow, and aerobic growth of these wild-type H. influenzae Rd (closed squares) and hktE- pgdx- H. influenzae Rd (open inverted triangles) cultures was subsequently monitored as a measure of their relative fitness at the early stationary phase of growth.
