Amino acid variability at each site of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase for untreated individuals (n = 29, figure 3a) and patients treated with nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor-containing regimen (n = 100, figure 3b). Gray rods indicate positions where variability exceeded 30%. Hachured rods indicate positions where differences between variability in treated and untreated patients exceeded 20%. a Variability was considered as the percentage of sequences that harbored (at a given position) an amino acid that was not the most frequently found in the studied set of sequences.
