Species identity was confirmed by real-time PCR assays targeting a sequence of the fliC gene that is specific for both species but does not discriminate B. mallei from B. pseudomallei. The real-time PCR assay targeting fliP is specific for B. mallei. Motility was also assessed as a phenotypic marker because B. pseudomallei is motile while B. mallei is not.
