Sensitivity of H. influenzae adhC strain to reactive aldehydes. Wild type (Rd KW20; black bars) and the adhC mutant (grey bars) strains were grown in BHI media in the presence of increasing concentrations of particular reactive aldehydes with medium levels of oxygen (50 ml culture in 250 ml flask). The ability to resist the toxicity of these chemicals was measured by an OD₆₀₀ reading after 18 h of growth. (*P < 0.0001, **P < 0.005, ***P < 0.0001).
