Thin-layer chromatography of cell-membrane total lipid extracts of E. faecalis strains. Bacterial cells were grown overnight, disintegrated, and stirred with butanol. Membrane lipids were extracted from butanol by phase partition according to Bligh and Dyer. 50 μg of lipid extract was applied to the TLC plate, separated using a solvent system of CHCl3/MeOH/H2O (65:25:4, v/v/v), and visualized with α-naphtol/sulfuric acid. The identity of the bands has been confirmed previously [5]. The glycolipids marked with an asterisk have not been analyzed.
