Cytokine production by differentiated THP-1 cells infected with strains representatives of different intracellular growth rates. Levels of TNF-α (panel A) and IL-10 (panel B) were determined in culture supernatants 3 hours after infection and at days 1, 4, and 7. Data are expressed as the mean ± standard error of three independent experiments per strain. Asterisks indicate significantly different (P < 0.05) cytokine production.
